A child does not need to be struck on the head to sustain brain injuries. Studies have indicated that infants who are shaken vigorously by the extremities or shoulders may sustain intracranial and intrasellar bleeding with no sign of external head trauma. Thus, early neglectful and physically abusive practices have devastating consequences for their small victims. Even after diagnosis and treatment the psychological consequences of emotional abuse persist. Study shows that young children who experience psychological abuse are often defiant and hostile . Critical Periods Of Brain Growth And Cognitive Function

The article I chose to analyze was â€Å"Critical periods of brain growth and cognitive function in children†. The research was about the relationship between brain growth and the impact it has on different periods of cognitive development. The hypothesis of the study was to determine if brain growth during different periods of development influenced cognitive functioning later in life. (Gale, C.R. 2003) The research was conducted by taking measurements of the head at 18 weeks gestation, within 48 hours of birth, 9 months, and 9 years. â€Å"Foetal head circumference was measured around the outer table of the skull using standard sonographic landmarks.† (Gale, C.R. 2003) At all other ages measurements were taken by using a tape measure wrapped tightly around the head. The weight of each child was taken at birth, 9 months, and 9 years. At birth and 9 months of age measurements were taken of the crown-heel length using a neonatal stadiometer, and at age 9 height me asurements were taken using a portable stadiometer. (Gale, C.R. 2003) Cognitive function of both the children and the mothers were measured using the Wechsler Abbreviated Intelligence Scale as part of the follow up study. (Gale, C.R. 2003) There were a total of 559 children involved in this study from the feonatal stage to 9 months of age. The mothers of each of the children involved in this study were part of an earlier study of nutrition during pregnancy between April 1992 and June 1993. The United States, The Melting Pot Essay Example For Students

The United States, The Melting Pot Essay The United States has Changed from a Melting Pot to a Vast Culture with Varying Racial Backgrounds. The United States, created by blending or melting many cultures together into one common man, known as an American. Modern communication and transportation accelerate mass migrations from one continent . . . to the United States (Schlesinger 21). Ethnic and racial diversity was bound to happen in the American society. As immigration began to explode, . . . a cult of ethnicity erupted both between non Anglo whites and among nonwhite minorities. (22). Until recently, the only country who has made a multiethnic society work, was the United States. Hector St. John de Crevecoeur said, in America . . . individuals of all nations are melted into a new race of men. Is this still true? The creation of the U.S. . . . was not to preserve old cultures but to forge a new, American culture. (Schlesinger 22). In the 20th century, the melting pot is not working, and the whole idea is under attack (Evans 76). The United States has changed from a melting pot to a vast culture with varying backgrounds. In years before, America was a collection of Chinese, Germans, Italians, Scots, Croats, etc., all craving freedom. Today, even the simple concept of an English-speaking nation is fading off the continent. In the old days, immigrants were taught in English in the public schools. (76). In America today, children are taught in German, Italian, Polish, and 108 other languages. Most of these schools are funded by 139 million federal dollars. Until recently, emigrants in the United States longed for admittance in societys mainstream. Now these groups demand separation from society, to be able to preserve and conserve their customs and languages. The biggest problem with this demand, is whatever accommodation takes place, must be done and accepted by the receiving society (Chavez 60). The increasing accommodations directed toward immigrant culture worries many Americans. Americans fear the special treatment granted to immigrants will effect the unifying force of the country. Today, the trend is toward multiculturalism, diversity and adapting the newcomer, rather than on the newcomer adapting himself or herself to . . . a diverse society (61). Many Americans believe the nation has lost control of its boundaries. Concerned if immigration continues, the U.S. economy will suffer, and that employment will be scarce. Immigrants . . .are flooding the welfare rolls and are heavily involved in crime.(Morganthau 18). The increase number of U. S. immigrants does effect the number of jobs available. The problem is, immigrants are either highly qualified ( take American jobs) or are less than skilled in any field (increase welfare). The view on immigration today is one of a drag on the economy, instead of a lift (18). In 1995, new immigration laws transfigure the American society. As a result, races group together to defend their customs. The current immigration problem also increases the racial tension facing America today. One result of racism in the United States is hate groups and gangs. Both have only one thing in commonviolence! The very use of the term of color which embraces blacks, . . .Asians, Native Americans and Hispanics, . . . many whom are ethnically white implies that these disparate groups are bonded simply by not being of Northern European descent. (Henry III 73). One example of these hate groups is the Ku Klux Klan, known for their hatred toward African Americans, Catholics, and Jews. The growing diversity of the American population makes the popularity of multiculturalism and Political Correctness explode. The main function of this craze is to raise minority self-esteem. Viewed by some, the obstacle this creates is not for the better. Multiculturalism helps unite groups and s eparates them from the rest of the country. . . .Civil liberties and human rights is portrayed as the root of all evil . . . (Schlesinger 3). A positive approach would have Americans stop seeing themselves as members of primarily one ethnic group, gaining their total identity from that group.White or black, Hispanic or Asian, they must envision themselves simply as Americans. The Selection of a Target Market Impacts on the Marketing Strategies Essay Example Essay Example

The Selection of a Target Market Impacts on the Marketing Strategies Essay Example Paper The Selection of a Target Market Impacts on the Marketing Strategies Essay Introduction Marketing is a system of business activities designed to plan, price, promote and distribute ‘want satisfying’ products to customers in the market in order to achieve business objectives. However, the total market is very large and it would be impossible to develop some strategies that would meet customer’s needs and wants of everyone better. Because of this, businesses break the market down into segments which are so important for businesses to aim at their specific target market. The best relevant business case study to illustrate the selection of market is ‘Sprite’ produced by Coca Cola. The target market needs to be identified. The target market is the current/ potential customers with similar characteristics. For ‘Sprite’, a new target market was selected to take advantage of the fact that young males drink the most soft drink. In this market, Sprite competes with other products such as Solo, Fanta based on its market segmentation in four key areas: Demographic, Geographic, Psychographic and Behavioural.?Demographic segmentation: It is the division of the market into groups based on demographic variables such as age, gender, family size, income, education. The market segmentation of Sprite in primary market demographic focuses on the male or teenager whose ages are between 12 and 17. It is based on their ages, income and gender. At the age of 12 to 17, they identify some products with characteristics of ‘Cool Refreshment’. And they cannot afford to some expensive products. The secondary market segmentation is to concentrate on all lemonade drinkers aged 8 to 29. According to family size, some of Mums and Dads buy soft drink for their families. So Sprite segments its target market to aim at those groups to purchase their products with low prices, and gain more profits. Geographic segmentation: the market is divided by location because it is assumed that the people who live in the same area will prob ably have similar needs and wants. These can be in the form of countries, states, cities and local neighbourhoods. While, Sprite was produced by any places like Urban. People lived in urban or cities are likely to spend some money on fashionable and popular products. And their standards of consumption are higher than other people who live in countryside.?Psychographic segmentation: it occurs when the market is divided into different groups ased on social class, lifestyles and personality characteristics. Nowadays, young males who have their own identity and make their own choice. They have their own lifestyles and motives to be a cool and trendy people. They are not fooled by traditional promotional ploys. They are attracted by creative and unique things. Based on this current situation, Sprite produces ‘cool soft drink’ to meet these male’s need and wants because its target market are the customers who are being honest and being interested in something fresh wit h particular personalities. Behavioural segmentation: this is the segmentation strategy when the market is divided into groups based on consumer knowledge, attitude towards use for and responses to a product. It involves purchase occasion, benefits sought and usage rate. In the context of Spite, building loyalty and repeat custom through relationships management is the way to take advantage of behavioural characteristics. It provides products with low price in many places and it has large customer base. Then buyers can be grouped according to the occasion on which they buy a particular product or service. The Selection of a Target Market Impacts on the Marketing Strategies Essay Body Paragraphs After identifying the methods used to segment target markets, it is very important and essential for business to develop marketing strategies in order to satisfy the needs of the target market to achieve marketing objectives effectively. Otherwise, in the same way, Sprite also focuses on marketing strategies which include marketing mix of four P’s: product, price, promotion and place.?Product: Product is a good or service that can be bought or sold in the marketplace that fulfils customer’s need. This strategy refers to 3 particular features: position, branding and packaging. But product itself was not changed as it has already been established by its market to have a great taste. However, Sprite can be available to change in range of sizes from 300ml bottles, 370ml cans to 2 litre bottles. 1. Positing: it is the strategy of placing the business in the market and creating an impression in customer’s mind. Creating a position that will give their products the grea test advantage in their target market. Sprite’ would probably be places below solo, coke, but above Fanta or other stores because of the ‘cool refreshment’ with low price. 2. Branding: is a product feature that adds values to business. And it is the tool to distinguish one company from others. A lot of customers may only buy product because the brand is well know such as Coca-Cola or Sola. During these years. ‘Sprite’ is establishing its own branding to make customers feel a sense of security and predictability. 3. Packaging: is the design of containers which Sprite used. It can protect products and provide information. The packaging of Sprite was changed in order to disassociate the drink with lemonade by designing a new label that reflected Sprite’s new ‘cool’ identity. It involves changing the colours from white to green and blue. It becomes more attractive and fresh. The circle of yellow and green means carbonation was removed and the only symbol associated with lemonade was a small yellow dot above the letter ‘i’of Sprite. That will make their target market (young children) interested in their fresh products?Price: Price is the amount of money for which anything is bought, sold or offered for sale. It is a major factor in influencing a customer’s decision to buy because it looks at the value the product and plays a crucial part in the marketing mix because if customers did not accept the price of the product, all other efforts relating to the good would be wasted. This strategy that Sprite used includes some methods: cost price, competition base pricing, market pricing and market penetration pricing. For example?Cost pricing: It is based on determining the cost of marketing a product and adding a mark-up to that cost to give the business a profit. For Sprite business, a can will sell for about $1. 0, with a production cost of 37 cents. Then they can gain 63cents per each. About five cents represents marketing which by industry standards is quite high.?Competition based pricing: it occurs when a business sets it prices with reference to a similar product from competing businesses. Sprite products are price competitive with other soft drinks. The price is the cheapest in the supermarkets. A can retails for $1. 40 or $1. 00 at a beach kiosk. Applying high prices in a very competitive supermarket will lead to lose sales that wouldn’t be sustainable. Market pricing: it is the price of a product is set in relation to what a business thinks the markets (consumers) are willing to pay for a product. And on the other hand, the target markets of Sprite are young males and teenagers. They have not got a large amount of money to buy something expensive. Most of them get money from their parents. Due to the low price, young adults can afford its lemonade soft drinks. They are willing to pay the money for Sprite.?Market penetration pricing: Sprite is being set a low in itial price on a product in an attempt to reach a mass market immediately. So it can help Sprite to gain a large number of sales. It also intends to discourage other business competitors. And on average, Coles will pay a lot less for 2 litre bottles of Sprite than a service station. Then a lot of outlets will pay money for Sprite as products based on saving costs. It allows Sprite to become established in the softdrink market.? Promotion: Promotion is an activity of informing and persuading their customers to buy their products. It involves personal selling, advertising, below the line, publicity and word of mouth. However, with the promotion of Sprite, a new advertising campaign was launched to completely beak away from the product’s old image of being ‘friendly and fun’. Due to this reason, they have advertisements on TV and in the newspapers with new slogan ‘Image is nothing Thirst is everything, Obey your thirst. This gave the products honesty and credi bility which translated into sales. They are also having sale in the market and giving discounts to customers. On the other hand, its target markets are mostly young teenagers who like playing basketball and trend to fresh and confidence. That’s why Sprite has an advertisement on TV on Saturday morning to show â€Å"The Dream Team’ is drinking Sprite.?Place: Place is concerned about getting the product in the right place at the right time. It is channel structure that transfer products to the market. It involves channels, distribution, and transport and inventory control. Different sales outlets or channels stock different Sprite products. ‘Sprite’ has a large range of places to be located. It is intensive market segmentation because people can buy the products anywhere. ‘Sprite’ set up its outlets in these places showed below: 1. Supermarkets (such as Woolworths, Coles, K-mart). There are a lot of people and families coming to these shops to buy some drinks and food what they want. 2. Petrol station. This is a good location when cars are having more petrol, drivers may feel thirsty. 3. Cinema. Cinema is a very popular place for young adults or teenagers. They organise to the cinema to watch movie together. They should buy some chips and soft drinks. Then ‘sprite’ might be their first choice due to low prices. So it will help ‘sprite’ expand their target markets and increase the profit. 4. Sports ground. For young males, they like to go to studio to do some exercises. During the exercise, they need some water or soft drinks to drink. So the meaning of ‘cool’. Sprite will attract their attention and persuade them to buy it. They will enjoy playing basketball and drinking ‘cool and fresh’ bottles. And a business has a choice regarding the number of intermediaries to use. Sprite has indirect channels that are distribution channel in which a producer uses intermediaries to serve the market because the products produced by Sprite are sold by retailers. History of the Zamboni free essay sample

The History of the Zamboni Although ice hockey was originated in the early 1800’s, the first Zamboni did not hit the ice until 1949. For well over a century, the sheet of ice was resurfaced by tediously shoveling off the snow and pouring water back over the ice. The technique left the ice in a miserable, almost unskatable state by today’s standards. Not only was it a poor surface to skate on, resurfacing a sheet of ice took nearly over an hour and a half to complete. Frank Zamboni’s invention of the Zamboni not only brought convenience to the rink, it revolutionized the speed of the game. Frank J. Zamboni was born in Eureka, Utah, in 1901 and grew up on a farm in Idaho, where he helped with the family farm and worked as a mechanic in a local garage. In 1920, Frank moved to the City of Paramount, California with his brother, Lawrence. Electric Co. As electric refrigerators became more common nearly a decade later, the demand for ice-box services diminished leaving the Zamboni brothers with an opportunity to put the ice machines to new use. In 1939, Frank, Lawrence, and their cousin, Pete built one of the largest rinks in the country, Iceland, but Frank became so fed up with the lengthy ice-resurfacing procedure that he attempted to build and ice resurfacer of his own, pulled by a tractor in March of 1943. With a fail at his first attempt, Frank’s persistence urged him to try again after World War II, where he was left with a military surplus of cheap parts. Using the parts, Frank reconstructed his prototype but failed again when the self-propelled resurfacer with two-wheel drive was found to have no traction on the ice. After much trial and error though, Frank got his first ice-resurfacer, the Model A, working and applied for a patent, which he received four years later. Now with his patent, he was able to form Frank J. Zamboni Co. His first customer was world renowned figure skater, Sonja Henie. Sonja loved Frank’s new invention so much that he started receiving orders in no time from all around the world. Overtime, the demand for Frank’s â€Å"Zambonis† became such a high demand that he opened two ice-resurfacing factories. Frank came up with new models year after year. Starting from the model A to the present Zambonis, Frank produced over 28 different models ranging from gas to zero emissions to electric. â€Å"Each of the first dozen or so machines Frank built was an improvement on its predecessor. My dad had been changing every machine up until 1954,† explained Frank’s son, Richard. The Zamboni, costing between $10,000 and $200,000, depending on the model, takes on average ten minutes to complete a sheet of ice. There are four steps in the process of making perfect ice: shaving, collecting, washing and renewing. The fifty seven pound, specially-made blade shaves a thin layer off the top of the ice. If the blade goes too deep, it creates an uneven surface and you could risk hitting concrete. If not deep enough, it does nothing. The snow that is created by scraping the top layer of the ice is then pick up by large skew conveyors, sending it up the back of the Zamboni. From here, the snow is then picked up by a large conveyor belt and carried up into the snow tank. After each resurfacing, the snow is dumped out of the Zamboni. Water jets at the back end of the machine spray water heated up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit to flush out the ice and replace the later that was just scraped off as well as fill in the grooves left by skates. As a vacuum sucks up the extra water left from the jets, a final layer of heated water is sprayed onto the ice. At this time, a large towel trailing the machine evenly distributes the water over the ice, leaving it smooth and ready to skate on. The Zamboni has come a long way since Frank Zamboni first started experimenting with it in his backyard in 1947. Starting as fridge scraps, to war scraps, to the Model B jeep chassis, the Zamboni machine has been designated the official ice resurfacer of the NHL today. Each Zamboni ice resurfacer is constructed, painted, and completed in about three weeks with no assembly lines by 30-35 employees. Big time companies use the surface of the Zambonis as a canvas for advertising. In spite of being pulled out of school in the 9th grade, Frank Zamboni received an honorary doctorate in engineering from Clarkston University in 1987. Frank Zamboni invented the

M8A1 Corporate Social Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

M8A1 Corporate Social - Essay Example One of the current trends in CSR is the emergency of green manufacturing through energy efficient technologies and reduction of raw material wastage in the manufacturing process (Mullerat, 2010). Corporations have undertaken measures to re-engineer the operations in order to make them more eco-friendly and sustainable. May, Cheney & Roper (2007) asserts that a majority of the multinational companies use recyclable packaging, renewable energy sources and have minimized pollution levels occasioned by their operations. In addition, many corporations have contributed heavily to social causes such as disease prevention, education and sanitation in order to ensure positive social impact in the communities. (Amao, 2011). The corporations have encouraged employees to volunteer in social causes of their choice. Another common trend that is evident is the increase in CRS reporting and engagement. Many companies have created CSR departments that are supposed to collect data and prepare annual CSR reports and the impact on the company activities on the social environment (Amao, 2011). CSR has been integrated in the non-financial reporting in order to create awareness that the business is a responsible company that caters for the needs of all stakeholders. Many companies have implemented the ISO 14000 environmental management standard and Global Pact standards that aim at ensuring social sustainability (Asongu, 2007). There is increasing use of the social media in CSR activities of the companies. Many businesses have formed online blogs and discussion forums that are used to understand the ideas and suggestions of the stakeholders (Mullerat, 2010). The thirsty for information and environmental activism has forced companies to report their CSR activities through the social media in order to maintain the regular engagement with the stakeholders (May, Cheney & Roper, 2007). However, it is worthy noting that the government has increased its oversight and regulatory
